Storing Paintings

Packing and Storing Paintings, as well as Transporting Them

Moving and handling artwork, especially when storing paintings, can be a nerve-wracking experience. The concern for damaging valuable pieces due to improper packing or storage is valid. To address this, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to safely pack, store, and transport your paintings, ensuring their protection.

Storing paintings:

  • Cleaning and Drying Before you store a painting at all, make sure it’s clean and dry. Mold growth and discoloration can be caused by any residual moisture or dirt.
  • Wrap the artwork in acid-free bubble wrap or paper to ensure its safety. The painting is protected from dust, moisture and physical damage. Secure the painting once it has been wrapped to ensure that the protective materials remain in place.
  • Ideal Storage Conditions: Choosing the right environment is key to correctly packing and storing art. It’s important to store artwork in a cool, dry area that is free of direct sunlight. Extremes of temperature and humidity may cause paintings to warp, crack or fade.
  • Avoid risky areas: While tempting, basements and attics are not the best places to store and pack paintings. These areas are prone to frequent temperature and moisture fluctuations that can damage artwork.
  • Storing multiple paintings: Always place a piece of acid-free cardboard or paper between each painting if you are storing more than one. It will prevent them from touching each other and causing scratches or paint transfer.

How to Pack Paintings for Moving or Transporting:

  • Preparation: Just as with packing and storage, start with a dry and clean painting. The artwork is now ready for its journey.
  • Wrapping and Securing Protect your painting with acid-free paper, bubble wrap or other protective materials. Use packing tape once you’re done to secure the protective materials.
  • The box you choose can make all the difference. Choose a cardboard box with a solid construction that is slightly larger than the artwork. You can cushion the painting and stop it from moving.
  • Filling the box: Add packing peanuts to fill any gaps within the box. You can also use additional bubble wrap. It is important to use this step when packing artwork and storing it for transport. This will provide an additional layer of protection from shocks and jolts.
  • Sealing the Box and Labeling the Package: Seal the box after the painting has been packed securely inside. Label the package clearly as “fragile”, “artwork” or “fragile” to ensure that it is handled with care during transit.

Transporting Paintings:

  • Securing the Paintings: If paintings are not secured properly, they can fall or shift during transportation. You must ensure that they remain stable during bumpy or long rides.
  • Temperature and Humidity Control – Just like when packing and storing your artwork, you should avoid extreme conditions while transporting. You should move art on mild days, free of extreme weather conditions.
  • Separate multiple paintings using foam or cardboard. This will prevent damage from rubbing together.
  • Choose a Shipping Company. If you are not transporting your painting yourself, select a shipping firm that specializes in artwork transport. They will have a wealth of experience.
  • Insure your painting at its full value. Accidents happen. Having insurance ensures that you are compensated in the event of a loss or damage.

The key to packing, storing and transporting artwork is meticulous preparation. You can keep your paintings in perfect condition by using the right materials and techniques.
